The Director of Architecture at PMBA Architects is a talented, collaborative, and industrious leader within this expanding, wellness-focused design firm. The ideal candidate for this exciting new leadership position will be a results-driven leader who embraces challenges and is enthusiastic about developing a culture of collaboration and innovation. You are a client, business, people, and project leader supporting the development of PMBA’s practice areas. As Director of Architecture, you will direct and provide leadership to design teams in developing responsive design solutions that support client and community needs. This position will cultivate new and enhance existing client relationships to grow the firm’s architecture practice.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Direct and provide leadership for design teams.
  • Market to retain and cultivate current client relationships and assist with the development and marketing of new client relationships.
  • Lead the orchestration and strategy of client design presentations.
  • Identifies, through consultation, clients’ needs and requirements, approximate budget, timetable, and possible needs for future expansion.
  • Determines clients’ preferences regarding materials, styles, colors, and other variables.
  • Attempts to identify clients’ priorities in terms of needs vs. desires through collaboration.
  • Assists clients in defining their priorities and vision by preparing preliminary sketches of options.
  • Demonstrates creativity, foresight, and mature architectural judgement in anticipating and solving unprecedented architectural problems.
  • Provides oversight to design teams for delivery of client design goals and objectives for projects of all sizes and scope.
  • Participate in the orchestration and strategy of client design presentations.
  • Collaborates with in-house marketing team on RFPs, marketing, and business development opportunities.
  • Determine the requirements and best practice components for systems and practices to meet clients’ needs.
  • Prepares and presents designs, specifications, estimated costs, and proposed construction schedule.
  • Executes and enhances the design intent while providing oversight to design team in the preparation of construction documents.
  • Model reviews – ensure efficient design strategies are being used and details meet design intent.
  • Manages project teams and collaborates with clients, engineers, planners, and other industry professionals.
  • Modifies new or existing plans as required to meet the clients’ needs.
  • Collaborates with clients to select and award construction contracts.
  • Collaborates with contractors and clients to facilitate the building process to meet clients’ specifications including job meetings, RFIs, Bulletins, shop drawing review, etc.
  • Work closely with Architectural Department Manager
  • May work closely with building regulations and zoning departments.
  • Updates existing design techniques with respect to latest design trends.
  • Keep current on changes regarding new technologies, trends, and innovations of best practices in architecture and recommend changes and new services as appropriate.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to team members, interns, and co-ops.
  • Delegate, provide feedback, and follow up on tasks assigned to support staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to translate client ideas into visual and/or tangible references such as drawings or models.
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulatory standards.
  • Able to travel to other PMBA locations or client project locations as needed.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Registered Architect required.
  • Fifteen or more years of relevant experience.
  • Certifications – LEED preferred.
  • Healthcare and/or corporate design experience preferred.
  • Strong client relationships are preferred.
  • Excellent portfolio of work.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
